A bilingual translation of a historical document written in 1681 by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Mexico's feminist poet nun who lived during Mexico's Colonial Period. She was known as the Tenth Muse. In this letter, Sor Juana defends her right and freedom to study notwithstanding her feminine gender.
Una traducción bilingüe de un documento escrito en 1681 por Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, una monja poetisa mexicana y feminista que vivió durante la epoca colonial de México. Ella es reconocida como la Decima Musa. En esta carta, Sor Juana defiende su derecho allibre albedrió no obstante su condición de mujer.
But the
private and public studies, who has prohibited them from the women?
Don't they have as rational a soul as the men?
Then that
rational soul, why can't it enjoy the same privilege of the
elucidation in Letters together with the rational soul of men? That
rational soul of women, is it not as capable of so much wit and glory
of God as yours? Then why won't it be capable of so much information
and sciences, that is less? What divine revelation, what
determination of the Church, what judgement of reason created for us
women such a severe law?

Why is it
wrong, that I prefer to study, rather than to be at the window
speaking nonsense, or in a cell murmuring as to what happens inside
or outside of the house; or fighting with another, or scolding the
sad maid; or wandering the entire world in thought?
Above all,
being conscious that God has inclined me to the sciences, literature
and the arts, and it didn't seem to me that this was against his most
holy Law, neither against the obligation of my state.
I have this
inclination; if it be wrong, I didn't make myself rational. I was
born with it and with it I will die.
...
I repeat
again that my intention is to merely beg Your Reverence that if you
don't want to favor me, please don't remember me, if it is not to
entrust me to the Lord, and I believe, that you, in your infinite
kindness will do it in all truth.
Pero los
estudios privados y particulares, ¿quien los ha prohibido a las
mujeres? ¿No tienen ellas alma racional como los hombres?
Pues esa
alma racional, ¿por qué no gozará el privilegio de
los ilustración en las letras juntamente con el alma racional
de los hombres? Esa alma racional de las mujeres, ¿No es capaz
de tanta gracia y gloria de Dios como la suya? Pues, ¿por
qué no será capaz de tantas noticias y ciencias,
qué es menos? ¿Qué revelación divina,
qué detenninación de la Iglesia, qué dictamen de
la razón hizo para nosotras tan severa ley?
...
¿Por
qué ha se ser malo que el rato que yo habia de estar en una
reja hablando disparates, o en una celda murmurando cuanto pasa
dentro y fuera de casa; o peleando con otra, o riñendo a la
triste sirvienta; o vagando por todo el mundo con el pensamiento, lo
gastara en estudiar?
Sobre todo
estando consiente de qué Dios me inclinó a la ciencia y
la literatura y las artes, y no me pareció qué esto
fuera contra su Ley Santisima, ni contra la obligación de mi estado?
Yo tengo
esta inclinación; si es mala, yo no me hice racional,
nací con ella y con ella he de morir.

repetir que mi intención es sólo suplicar a Vuestra
Reverencia qué si no quiere favorecerme, no se acuerdé
de mí, si no fuere para enconmendarme al Señor, que
bien creo de su mucha caridad lo hará con toda verdad.
